why did you want to work for hmv?

i left school without a clue what to do careers wise, and my one big passion was music in general (and Bowie in particular) and I sort of fell into the job and found I loved it.

what is your inspiration?

grace jones/nightclubbing. Classic 80’s art rock/new wave album – check it out!

what opportunities have hmv given you over the years and what career path have you followed?

over the last 22 years hmv has given me the opportunity to progress from sales assistant to store manager of the 3rd largest store in the estate.

i have followed a relatively traditional career structure within hmv, in that I moved stores to progress my career.

What is your proudest achievement at work?

my boss nominated me for store manager of the year last year which was a huge achievement.

Mark's story

i am the store manager based at hmv Trocadero, Piccadilly Circus, London. The key components of my day are ensuring the store runs smoothly, customer service happens, commercial opportunities are spotted and acted on, store teams are motivated, and carrying out their roles effectively, sales floor and back areas are to high standards, stock is ordered and merchandised by the team to maximise sales and lots more!

i love the very competitive environment between stores, and the opportunity to run your store like your own business with bags of autonomy. The opportunity is there for you to make your own mark through your people skills and passion for selling stuff. It is always about who has the best staff, who has sold the most, who has the best store etc…. all things in your control. Its very hard work but the rewards are there.
