Frankie's story

Why did you join hmv?

I was working part time at the Borders Oxford Street store after being made redundant from their head office. My friend told me about the job that was going at hmv Maintenance and that it was very similar to what I was doing before and it was full time so I jumped at the chance. Funnily enough the day before I was offered the job at hmv the staff at Borders Oxford Street were told that the store was closing and we would all be made redundant, so hmv really did save me.

What do you enjoy most about working at hmv?

I love working with my team, they really are great people. I love coming in to work not knowing what the day will bring and even though the days can get stressful we all help each other out. They are just the best people I have ever had the pleasure of working with.

What does your job involve?

My job involves the basic to the bizarre of maintenance. I work on the helpdesk so the stores will log jobs with us that can range from leaking toilets to aircon not working, leaking roofs to burst pipes and flooding. It is down to us get contractors out to them to get things sorted. We also cover certain project works and we have played a small part in the Fast Forward project and setting up the SLT (Short Lease Trading - over Christmas) stores. There is never a dull day in maintenance especially when Mother Nature plays a part in our stores. Only the other day the wind in Ayr actually blew down some of the store's ceiling.

What opportunities have you had to progress?

My boss believes in trying to progress us personally so he will give us responsibility and certain projects to run. Since working with him he has given me a cleaning project where we sourced 5 separate cleaning companies to clean the entire hmv estate. I was in charge of setting it all up and making sure the transition from one company to the new one was smooth. I am currently happy where I am as I tend to learn something new everyday.

What's been your highlight of working for hmv?

I would have to say the highlight of working at hmv has definitely been the conferences. I have seen live acts that I would never been able to see. hmv are definitely the best that I have ever worked for and they do look after their staff as much as they can.

What / who is your inspiration?

It sounds quite sad but my Nan who unfortunately passed away this year as she played her part in WW2 driving the ambulances and just being formidable. My mother also is a very big inspiration to me. Both women fought for what they believed in and me and my sisters wouldn't be the people that we are now if it hadn't been for my mum fighting for us.
